The Oral Microbiota

The Oral Microbiota – Our Expertise

Microbiome expertise is at the heart of The Smilery's DNA. Today, science shows that the balance of oral microbiota influences not only the health of our teeth and gums, but also the overall balance of our body.

What is the oral microbiota?

The oral microbiota is the living ecosystem that inhabits our mouth.

It brings together billions of microorganisms — mainly bacteria — that participate in digestion, protect us against pathogens and contribute to the balance of our oral and overall health.

Both rich and complex, this environment plays an essential part in maintaining a healthy mouth and, more broadly, a healthy body.

Did you know?

Oral microbiota plays a key role in the health of your mouth - and far beyond.
1 billion bacteria per milliliter of saliva
700 different species of bacteria in the mouth
1 in 2 adults has oral microbiota imbalance often without knowing it.*

4 signs that may indicate an imbalance of the oral microbiota.

-Yellow teeth
-Sensitive gums
-Bad breath
-Dental cavities

3 risks related to this imbalance
Chronic low-grade inflammation
Increased risk of cardiovascular disease*
Links with diabetes, Alzheimer's and digestive disorders

The consequences of an unbalanced oral microbiota

When an imbalance sets in (this type is called dysbiosis) the impact can be both local and systemic.

The impact on the mouth can result in bad breath, tooth discoloration, cavities, gum inflammation, or periodontal diseases.

Furthermore, beyond the oral sphere, scientific studies have linked oral dysbiosis to chronic low-grade inflammation, associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease*, type 2 diabetes**, and studied correlations with Alzheimer’s disease*** and certain digestive disorders***.

Maintaining and revitalizing the balance of the oral microbiota is therefore a global health issue and challenge.

How can I take care of my oral microbiota?

Taking care of your oral microbiota means maintaining its balance and supporting its vitality.

Prebiotics nourish, stimulate and revitalize good bacteria naturally present in the mouth, promoting a healthy and dynamic ecosystem. Simultaneously, selective antibacterial active ingredients target pathogenic bacteria without disturbing any beneficial flora.

Our dental microbiome care integrates this approach: it participates in rebalancing and revitalizing the oral microbiota, for a lastingly healthy mouth and a positive impact on your overall health.
